Breda University of Applied Sciences, or BUas, is known for having the best games programme in the Netherlands and one of the best in Europe. Every reason, then, to visit its Industry Showcase and find inspiration.
What makes BUas special is that its teaching is dedicated to developing games, particularly the highest-end productions, also known as AAA games. While many other universities of applied sciences offer game development as a specialism, a minor or a route towards becoming an all-round indie developer, BUas chooses to produce specialists ready to work at major game development studios.
This was reflected in the showcase. It was not only final-year students presenting impressive games: even first-years did so. Project group sizes vary, and in the third year, a large group of 13 students can work on a single project for an entire year.
There was no shortage of ambition: some groups had even built their own engine. There was a VR game, and multiplayer, often considered too difficult for the scope of student projects, was embraced here. For example, I played a cooperative three-player shooter.
Consistent use of Unreal Engine produces visually impressive games. Many students come from abroad, further demonstrating the university’s reputation.

Games industry
They do not call it an industry showcase for nothing. The industry was indeed present in large numbers. Alongside the DGA, I saw major studios such as Guerrilla, Nixxes, Miniclip and Triumph Studios scouting for talent.
I was told that students’ opportunity to spend their entire final year on a year-long internship is a major advantage: studios can get to know them during that period and then offer them a job. Game development is so difficult that six months is not enough for that.
Does Breda outperform every other educational institution in the Netherlands? In AAA game development, yes, but there are plenty of ways for programmes elsewhere to distinguish themselves. HKU does so with a stronger focus on indie games and Unity, and THUAS with Godot. But if you want the very best in AAA game development, Breda is the place to be.
