At GameLab, we live and breathe gamification and serious gaming. We know better than anyone how interactive simulations can make complex social challenges easier to understand. Recently, we had the chance to share our passion and expertise at the Zuid-Holland Serious Game Event. It was a day full of inspiration, creative interaction, sharp insights and, of course, a healthy dose of competition.

Studio Spaak: humour with a message

After the introduction, it was time to get involved. Studio Spaak’s performance provided a fantastic transition into practice. With their distinctive mix of theatre, interaction and humour, they immediately got the room moving. They held up a mirror to the audience on collaboration and innovation. As well as plenty of laughter, it put everyone in the right active frame of mind for the day’s main activity: playing games themselves.

Putting it into practice: tackling grid congestion

Of course, no serious game event is complete without controllers, game boards or simulations. Participants split into groups to try a variety of games. Representing GameLab, I joined a table focused on a particularly topical and complex challenge: electricity grid congestion.

The aim of the game? To keep a region’s energy infrastructure running, prevent overloading of the electricity grid and ensure the transition to sustainable energy keeps moving. It was a dynamic game in which strategic insight, quick decisions and clear communication with teammates were crucial.

Our team found the perfect balance between sustainable growth and grid stability. Through tactics and teamwork, we secured victory and left the other two groups far behind.

Spelen Werkt! — keynote by Karen Sikkema

The day ended strongly with a keynote by Karen Sikkema, an expert in learning through play and author of the acclaimed book Spelen Werkt!. Karen explored the psychology behind serious gaming. She clearly demonstrated how games break down barriers, encourage behavioural change and make complex subjects tangible. Her vision fits perfectly with our philosophy at GameLab: play is more than a leisure activity; it is a serious and highly effective way to make an impact in the real world.

Why serious gaming has a bright future

Above all, I returned to GameLab with renewed energy. The Zuid-Holland Serious Game Event once again proved that introducing people to game mechanics immediately encourages an active approach to learning and working. Whether tackling the energy crisis, training staff or redesigning processes, serious games offer the safe testing environment that organisations urgently need today.
