The Dutch Games Association organised an event at Utrecht University about generative AI and its impact on the games industry.
AI is a disruptive technology sending shockwaves around the world. Generative AI is transforming creative workflows, but what does that mean for the games industry? How are Dutch games studios integrating these tools, and where do we draw the line on ethics, ownership and originality?
In this edition of DGA Talks, speakers shared their experiences, concerns and questions about using generative AI in game development. What are its practical applications, what dilemmas do we encounter and how can we use this technology responsibly?
- Insight into how generative AI is already being used in Dutch games studios
- Practical considerations and an ethical framework
- A clearer picture of what genAI could mean for your work
This was the first DGA meetup on AI since the emergence of generative models, and it was well attended. Opinions on this subject are highly polarised in the games industry; around a quarter of game developers want nothing to do with generative AI. That made discussing the subject particularly interesting.
Speakers shared practical experiences and tips, visions of the future, research questions and findings. The event ended with a panel featuring Martine Spaans, DGA General Manager; Laurens Rutten, director of CoolGames; and Matthijs Dierckx, composer and writer.
The conclusion was that AI is here to stay and will become increasingly capable and efficient. Anyone trying to keep up with everything can sometimes feel overwhelmed by the pace. But a healthy interest in the subject and the benefits it could bring to your work will be important for the future.
