Digital Twin

Commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat, GameLab is developing a digital twin of the Low Tech Campus. The campus is one of the testing grounds within Rijkswaterstaat’s Living Lab InnovA58 innovation project, located near the Kloosters rest area on the A58 in the municipality of Oirschot, near Eindhoven.

The Low Tech Campus testing ground covers around 500–1,000 hectares surrounding the Kloosters rest area on the A58, locally known as the hamlet of Straten. The area faces challenges including the effects of climate change on its water balance. The digital twin is intended to visualise these challenges and contribute to future solutions. The idea is to run it in the InnovA58 innovation pavilion, where road users can try it for themselves.

InnovA58 began in 2022 as a collaboration between The Hague University of Applied Sciences and Rijkswaterstaat. From 2024, the project has been based at GameLab, where students are improving and expanding the digital twin.

The first two students, Roeland van der Velde and Rainald Isabella, improved the viewer, making the road and service area look better. The cars’ AI enables them to drive along the road and overtake one another.

In the next iteration, students Tarun Gulraj, Nuno Sadi and Eric Bull worked on the project with support from Game Tailors. The viewer changed in character: instead of an open world in which users had to work out what to do, it became a clearer and more usable showcase of the innovations at the site.

The project runs for a total of two years. Subsequent student teams will work on visualising the area’s water-management challenges in the viewer, allowing policymakers and project stakeholders to explore them.
