How can puzzles help people understand a healthcare experience? With that question in mind, GameLab students Apple and Dominique visited De Mobiele Verwarring on 1 October 2026. They are developing the Healthcare Technology Escape Room for mboRijnland’s Experimenteerhuis and gathered experience and inspiration for their own design.
De Mobiele Verwarring, created by nursing lecturer Karin Schokker, invites participants into the world of someone with dementia. Apple and Dominique experienced how the setting, sensory stimuli and puzzles work together to help people understand that perspective. For Apple, its strength lay particularly in how the puzzles work as metaphors: they make the subject visual and interactive, helping people develop greater understanding and empathy.
Apple said afterwards, in comments translated from English:
“The room was exceptionally well designed to stimulate different senses. Some puzzles were so cleverly devised that I definitely want to draw inspiration from them. It was a very different experience from the puzzle games I am used to. It even made me excited about working for an escape room company after graduation.”
The visit gives the students useful starting points for their own Healthcare Technology Escape Room. How do you connect a puzzle to a learning objective? And how do you ensure participants not only find a solution, but also have a lasting experience? Apple and Dominique will take these questions into the further development of their project for the Experimenteerhuis.
