Original arcade cabinets are wonderful until they break down. The Palacade in GameLab's arcade room had stopped working. A student team repaired it... and upgraded it at the same time.
The Palacade is an arcade cabinet that used to stand at Paladin Studios in The Hague. Around 2014, studio staff converted an original Mortal Kombat cabinet into a retro machine capable of playing different games. After Paladin had to close its doors, the cabinet found its way to GameLab.
The cabinet was regularly used in GameLab's arcade room until its buttons eventually stopped responding. Understandable, as hardware sometimes simply needs replacing.
A team of five Innovative Development students worked on the cabinet and upgraded several components at the same time. The PC inside received a new drive, for example. An SSD boots much faster than the original disk from 2014.
More buttons were added too, allowing a wider range of games to be played on the cabinet. The PC was reinstalled and now offers more games.
The finished cabinet looks tidy and is ready to play in GameLab's arcade room, ensuring many more years of enjoyable retro gaming!
