For anyone wishing to learn more about quantum technology and its impact on society, WAAG Futurelab is creating a board game in collaboration with the Civic Technology research group at The Hague University of Applied Sciences. GameLab is helping test the game. The second test round was scheduled for today.
The first test round took place a few weeks ago. The main feedback then was that the game still felt somewhat complex. The new version is considerably simpler, which benefits the gameplay.
We played for around two hours. In this board game, you combine cards to solve social challenges with quantum technology. Some solutions generate a lot of money but are less desirable ethically. You have to make choices about this. When someone has a solution, they must pitch it to the other participants.
If players do not cooperate effectively, the result can make the world worse rather than better. Participants therefore play with and against each other simultaneously. An interesting dynamic that encourages strategic choices.
Various suggestions were again made for improving the game further. The final result should be a game that can be played in about an hour, for example in schools, to improve understanding of quantum technology and encourage people to think about its opportunities and threats.
