Commissioned by GameLab, European Project Semester students have devised a game for the Nationaal Videogame Museum. Their assignment was to develop an idea that lets visitors explore the museum through play.
The museum's challenge is that many visitors linger in a small section of the collection, even though there is so much more to experience. The Videogame Museum therefore wants to draw visitors into a game, as it were, as soon as they enter the building.
Six students of six different nationalities were tasked with imagining what that game would look like. They had complete creative freedom but needed to consider applicability and feasibility. They therefore made several visits to the museum.
Once they had finished their concept, the museum was very enthusiastic. In their game, "Trapped in Pixels", visitors can customise an avatar and then search for keys made up of pixels. Each pixel can be earned by answering questions about the games they play. Visitors can also follow a specific profile and indicate preferences, so they do not have to play games that do not suit them.
It remains to be seen when the Nationaal Videogame Museum can take the next development steps, because it is first moving to a new location. But the initial ideas are now in place, so progress can certainly be faster if it draws on these talented students' ideas. A collaboration that leaves us wanting more.
