At the pre-NATO summit “Securing The Future, Innovation For Resilience” in The Hague, The Hague University of Applied Sciences presented a cyber wargame called Impact & Resilience. Participants could experience protecting a vital piece of infrastructure and see the effects of their decisions.

Impact & Resilience was created by the Cyber Security Living Lab (CySLL), inspired by a game from Lancaster University. Across two sessions, around 50 participants discussed the cybersecurity of a power station in groups for just under an hour. Each round, they received a score and feedback on their choices.

Next semester, GameLab will collaborate with CySLL to create a wargame too. These sessions clearly demonstrated the demand. The interactive nature of the game prompted plenty of discussion and thorough reflection on decisions. Participants found this highly useful and instructive, even the experts who work in this field every day.

It was an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the value of serious gaming to an international audience with a defence focus. Many thanks to Professor of Applied Sciences Peter Roelofsma for inviting us.
