For Rijkswaterstaat’s InnovA58 project, GameLab is collaborating with Game Tailors to build a viewer that visualises innovations along the A58 motorway. The project has now been running for over a year. Last week, stakeholders met in Den Bosch to discuss its next phase.
Progress was demonstrated at the Expo in February. The above-ground situation is clearly visible, and users of the simulation can explore the innovations at the service area and innovation strip, as well as their impact.
However, a great deal also happens underground. This concerns water management, or the “water challenge” as Rijkswaterstaat calls it. With drought expected, innovation is needed to store and reuse rainwater that falls on the motorway, for example. The viewer can help explain this.
The viewer will also need to use real historical data to show how combining the technology with that data provides a powerful way of visualising situations. This could lead to a much more accurate digital twin.
There is therefore plenty to do for Nuno Sadi and Eric Bull, the students currently working on the project, and their successors. The project runs until May 2026, after which the InnovA58 viewer will be installed in the pavilion beside the A58.
