HHS GameLab attended the European Rural Roadwater Rescue (triple R) symposium in Brussels, using the 3D viewer being developed for Rijkswaterstaat to demonstrate the innovations being applied in the InnovA58 project in the Netherlands to collect, purify and reuse road runoff.

The symposium featured talks, panel discussions and workshops, enabling different countries and organisations to discuss the issues and exchange experiences. Water-related challenges are not confined to the Netherlands. Similar conditions also occur in regions of Belgium, France and Germany.

The InnovA58 3D viewer of Kloosters was a real eye-catcher at the event, held in the Flemish Government's Marie-Elisabeth Belpaire Building. The students Nuno Sadi and Eric Bull, who worked on the project on behalf of HHS GameLab, were on hand to explain the viewer to symposium visitors.

Development of the viewer has been underway at GameLab for around 1.5 years. Working with applied games specialists Game Tailors has brought it to a level suitable for decision-makers and policymakers. Work will continue for approximately another year to complete the environmental simulation, implement all the innovations and connect live environmental data to the simulation.

We also had the opportunity to attend several sessions and learn more about the challenges we face and the solutions being studied and implemented by the various water management authorities in our country and neighbouring countries.

Reusing rainwater that falls on roads is being considered and tested in practice. It is a necessary step towards more circular and resilient water management.

It was an excellent showcase for HHS GameLab and the outstanding work done by the InnovA58 students. Many thanks to Rijkswaterstaat for the assignment and the invitation to attend the Rural Roadwater Rescue symposium.
